Project particulars

Overview

Running from 1st May 2016 to 30th April 2019. the Advanced Limes Applications project (ALApp) uses digital models, 3D scans, augmented reality and traditional interpretation, such as video and text, to create an engaging and interactive experience for visitors across the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. The project is a collaboration of four organisations from Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom: Bavarian State Conservation Office, Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation, EduFilm & Medien and Historic Environment Scotland. ALApp is funded by the European Union's Creative Europe programme, the Bavarian State Office and Historic Environment Scotland. The support from Creative Europe is received through its Culture subprogramme as a smaller scale cooperation project (call reference EACEA 29/2015) under grant agreement no. 2016-1638. The project's has a total budget of 390 000 €, of which 200 000 € is funding from Creative Europe.

Aims & objectives

The aims of the ALApp project are twofold: to advanced apps and related content for locations of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site in Bavaria and Scotland, and to create
a strong stakeholder community with other European Limes sites.

The project will achieve its aims through three distinct objectives:

  1. Development: significantly advance an existing mobile app platform for interactive site interpretation and on-site visitor engagement at site of the Europe’s Roman Limes
    - Develop app module for 3D reconstructions
    - Develop app module for augmented reality
    - Develop app museum module to integrate artefacts in museums into the site context
    - Improve app’s transferability and ease of customisation for use by Limes sites across Europe
  2. Demonstration: create high-quality app content for Bavarian and Scottish sites of the FREWHS to
demonstrate the app’s capabilities for on-site visitor engagement
    - Research user / visitor interaction with the developed app and associated interpretation strategies
    - Create app content for 6 Scottish sites, including terrestrial landscapes, 3D and 4D reconstructions and integration of several archaeological finds from the sites, now stored offsite
    in museum collections
    - Create app content for 1 large-scale Bavarian site, including 3D and 4D reconstructions and integration of archaeological finds from the sites, now stored off-site in museum collections
  3. Engagement: engage with European stakeholders concerned with heritage site app developments and content to build a sustainable network and support future technological developments
    - Engage with FREWHS stakeholders and stakeholders of other Limes sites to build a stronger community, understand better their needs for digital on-site interpretation and to develop options for a future Network or Platform proposal to the Creative Europe programme
    - Engage with wider audience to promote digital on-site site interpretation technologies
